Kane misses penalty as Silva snatches Dortmund draw in Der Klassiker

Harry Kane missed a penalty for Bayern Munich and was punished by Fabio Silva’s late equaliser as Borussia Dortmund earned a 2-2 draw in Der Klassiker.

This was Kane’s first appearance since his Ballon d’Or win and he was honoured in Munich before kick-off, making his own entrance separate from the other players, but the game itself turned into a Halloween nightmare for him in the second half.

With Bayern leading through Konrad Laimer’s goal, Kane saw his penalty strike the crossbar before Serhou Guirassy levelled the match after the Bayern striker had been dispossessed in the build-up. Even his assist for Dayot Upamecano’s goal was not enough.

Harry Kane stepped up to the spot and missed a big penalty in against Borussia Dortmund

That is because Silva stepped up off the bench to equalise for Niko Kovac’s side in the 89th minute and though Lennart Karl hit the crossbar with the last kick of a dramatic game, Dortmund held on to remain level on points at the top of the Bundesliga table.

It was another Englishman, Jobe Bellingham, who had appeared to open the scoring following a mix-up involving Upamecano. But it was ruled out after a VAR check showed Carney Chukwuemeka colliding with the goalkeeper as Bellingham swept home.

Bayern, who came into this averaging over five goals per home game this season, took advantage immediately when Michael Olise, who had earlier struck the post, sent Laimer through on goal and the Austrian finished at the second attempt.

Dortmund’s leveller was a shock given Bayern’s dominance but neat work by Guirassy carved out the opening to leave Kane sweating. He looked to have spared his own blushes with a key assist but Silva’s intervention made it a night to forget for Bayern’s No 9.

This is a difficult period for Bayern with a hectic schedule coming at a time when they are without their recovering head coach Vincent Kompany and a growing injury list. With Luis Diaz already out, Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry went off injured in the first half.

Perhaps they will be pleased just to come through this run with their unbeaten record intact but this was an opportunity to open a gap to their great rivals. Silva’s strike, with a little help from Kane’s rare profligacy, means that their records remain identical instead.

Key moments from Munich…

10 – POST! Olise struck the frame of the goal with a curled shot
