Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, was set to perform two concerts in Russia this October, but both shows have now been cancelled, after weeks of uncertainty
Kanye West’s two shows in Russia have officially been cancelled. The rapper was supposed to perform in St Petersburg on 10 and 11 October, but there was uncertainty after the venue, Gazprom Arena, said it wouldn’t host him.
Organisers Say Agency have now confirmed that the concerts have been axed. They said: “Friends, it is with sincere regret that we inform you that the Ye concerts in Saint Petersburg on the scheduled dates will not be able to take place.
“In the near future, we will reach out to you with an official statement regarding the status of the project and future plans.
“Say Agency is very grateful to everyone who has been by our side these past month and a half: supporting us, worrying, and, like us, waiting for these concerts with all their hearts. We remain in touch and continue to work.”
The post was shared via messaging app Telegram. The agency added that ticket refunds would be available from 12 October and that they would release “rules and conditions” for the refunds at a later date.
This comes after weeks of uncertainty, following a statement Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman. Maria Zakharova called the planned shows unacceptable over comments the 49-year-old rapper had made about Hitler.
Last year, West released a song called Heil Hitler, along with swastika T-shirts. In January, he apologised via a full-page advert in the Wall Street Journal, where he said: “I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people.”
He added that his bipolar disorder had caused a “four-month long manic episode of psychotic, paranoid and impulsive behaviour” that “destroyed” his life.
The cancellation of the Russia shows comes after West’s shows in Marseille, France, were postponed. He was also denied a UK visa to perform at Wireless, which led to the cancellation of the London music festival, over his anti-semitic comments. His concerts in Italy were also cancelled over “public order and safety issues”.
