Karan Johar has officially revived his long-delayed biopic on legendary spymaster and R&AW founding chief Rameshwar Nath Kao (RN Kao).
The film, first announced in January 2020, has now locked August 11, 2028 for its theatrical release, setting its sights on the Independence Day blockbuster weekend.
The announcement came on September 21, 2026, marking the 58th anniversary of R&AW’s founding. Interestingly, the film is set to arrive in 2028, when the agency celebrates its 60th anniversary. The espionage thriller will trace Kao’s journey from 1955 to 1971, leading up to the formation of R&AW and its first major mission during the 1971 India-Pakistan war.
Based on national security analyst Nitin Gokhale’s acclaimed book Gentleman Spymaster, the ambitious project has reportedly been in research and pre-production for the past two years.
