MANGALURU: A 33-year-old man against whom more than 30 court warrants had been pending for nearly seven years has been arrested by the Mangaluru City Police’s special team.
The accused, identified as Ummar Nawaf, a native of Margathale in Ullal taluk, living at Manjeshwar in Kasaragod district was absconding for about seven years.
Police said he had repeatedly failed to appear before court in multiple criminal cases. Courts had issued more than 30 warrants for his arrest.
Acting on the directions of Mangaluru South Sub-Division Assistant Commissioner, a special team tracked down and apprehended Nawaf on August 2.
Police said Nawaf is an accused in more than 13 criminal cases registered over the years, mostly at the Ullal Police Station. The cases include offences such as attempt to murder, dacoity, kidnapping, extortion, robbery, theft, assault on public servants, criminal intimidation, unlawful assembly and rioting.
According to the police, proclamation proceedings had already been initiated against the accused in three cases after he failed to respond to court summons despite repeated opportunities. In another case, the court had declared it a Long Pending Case (LPC) because the accused could not be secured for trial.
