
MANGALURU: Police on Friday secured the accused in the murder of 21-year-old Lavanya, who was hacked to death at the KSRTC New Bus Stand in BC Road, in an alleged case of one-sided love.
Following the incident, special teams were formed to track the accused Chethan (22).
“Chethan, a distant relative of the victim and a resident of Odilnala village in Belthangady taluk, was traced and taken into custody in Mangaluru by a special police team,” SP Dr Arun told reporters.
During questioning after being secured, Chetan allegedly told police that he had consumed rat poison. He was immediately shifted to the government hospital for treatment.
Police said the formal arrest and other legal procedures would follow.
Lavanya, a resident of Uligram in Bantwal taluk, was attacked while waiting for a bus at the KSRTC New Bus Stand on Thursday evening. She succumbed to her injuries before she could receive treatment. The incident, captured on CCTV and videos circulated on social media, had triggered widespread outrage.
During the preliminary investigation, police found that the accused was a distant relative of the victim and suspected the attack was driven by his one-sided affection towards her.
