Vijayapura: Bijapur City MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, who was expelled from the BJP last year, on Wednesday announced that he would support and vote for BJP candidate Lingaraj Patil in the Karnataka Legislative Council elections scheduled for June 18.
He made the announcement in a letter addressed to BJP national president Nitin Nabin. Yatnal also renewed his attack on what he described as the growing influence of dynastic politics within the party’s Karnataka unit.
Yatnal, who posted a copy of the letter on X, said his commitment to the BJP’s ideology and to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership remained intact despite his expulsion from the party.
“Despite my expulsion, I remain ideologically committed to Hindu Rashtravad. I was elected by the people on the BJP symbol, and I owe a moral and political obligation to the lakhs of BJP workers and supporters who placed their trust in me. Therefore, I believe it is my duty as a committed BJP karyakartha to support the party’s officially nominated candidate in the forthcoming Karnataka Legislative Council elections,” he said.
“I wish to formally inform you that I shall cast my vote in favour of Shri Lingaraj Patil, the BJP candidate for the Legislative Council elections. Shri Lingaraj Patil is a grassroots karyakartha who has risen through organisational work and dedication to the party. Supporting his candidature is consistent with my lifelong commitment to strengthening the BJP and empowering genuine workers of the organisation,” Yatnal added.
He stated that his vote should not be viewed through the prism of personal grievances or factional considerations. Rather, it is a reaffirmation of his commitment to the party’s ideology and principles.
“The party is bigger than any individual or family, and my loyalty remains to Hindutva and the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said in the letter.
Yatnal also told the BJP national president that his differences with the state leadership stemmed from his opposition to the concentration of power in the hands of a single political family and not from any anti-party activity.
He argued that he had consistently raised concerns over “family-centric politics”, “adjustment politics” and a lack of accountability in the party’s state unit. He claimed these issues had led to dissatisfaction among grassroots workers and senior leaders and had weakened the party’s organisational strength in Karnataka.
Recalling his decades-long association with the BJP, Yatnal said he had been involved in building the party in North Karnataka and Kalyana Karnataka since the early 1980s. He added that the BJP’s growth in the region was the result of the sacrifices and efforts of thousands of party workers who worked without seeking personal recognition.
“I hope the central leadership will take note of the concerns repeatedly expressed by thousands of karyakarthas across Karnataka and undertake an impartial assessment of the organisational situation in the state. Such an exercise would help restore confidence among workers and strengthen the party’s prospects in the years ahead,” he concluded.
