Police busted the jewellery shop burglary case in Srikakulam. Five persons, who impersonated GST officials and committed the crime were arrested and two pistols, four cars, 12 mobile phones, worth Rs 49 lakh was seized from them.
Srikakulam SP KV Maheswar Reddy said on April 7, seven persons entered Sri Venkateswara Jewellery Shop at Nityanandanagar in Kasibugga around 12 noon, impersonating GST officials. They reached the shop on three bikes, displaying no number plates. As shop owner Killamsetti Ramakrishna Rao was alone in the shop, they assaulted him and cuffed his hands. Threatening him with a pistol, they made away with ornaments weighing 800 gm. Following a complaint from the victim, police registered a case and began investigation. Suspecting an inter-state gang behind the crime, they formed four teams to trace the culprits.
Basing on the CCTV footage, police identified the finance firms that funded the purchase of the bikes and concluded that it was the handiwork of old criminals. Police launched the search operations and took four accused into custody at Lotturu on Odisha border. They included Ramachandra Sahoo alias Babu belonging to Odisha, Kuna Barik, Banoz Bihari Patnaik, Tapan Maharana, Potnuru Tirumala Patro alias Hari of Kasibugga.
Two others belonging to Uttar Pradesh, and part of the group, are yet to be arrested. Police seized two cars bought for Rs 3,41,000 from the stolen valuables. There are 32 cases registered against the gang in Odisha.
