Rio Ferdinand’s son Tate has admitted he initially hated his step mum, Kate Ferdinand and made up lies about her to tell his dad

Kate and Rio Ferdinand are successfully living as a blended family, but it hasn’t always been that way. The former Manchester United and England defender married the ex TOWIE star in September 2019 and now share two children of their own – Cree, five, and Shae, two.

But Rio was married before and welcomed three children with his late wife, Rebecca Ellison, who sadly died in 2015 from breast cancer. And Kate has been open with her previous struggles when it came to Rio’s oldest kids.

Now Tate, 17, has admitted to making things difficult for his dad and his new wife in the beginning. He revealed he made up lies in the beginning, saying the now 35-year-old was meeting random men. He also falsely claimed she had locked him and his siblings in a room.

But speaking on this week’s edition of Kate’s Blended podcast, Tate admitted he had felt “so guilty” about liking Kate. He said he felt his loyalty should lie with his late mum.

Kate and Tate both reflected on the “hell of a journey” they’ have been on over the years during the chat. And he candidly confessed to hating her at times.

Kate also retold the story of how Rio’s oldest kids felt jealous. She explained how a delivery containing a present for the former footballer led to Tate accusing her of ‘meeting random men on the drive’.

The former reality TV star explained: “Once I got a phone for Rio and the kids were asleep… someone came to drop it on the drive and they’re a man.

“Tate told people that when dad’s not there, I’m meeting men on the drive. So then a few people thought that when Rio was out, I was meeting random guys on the drive.”

Tate then admitted she simply “had a hater in the house”. He said: “I used to be so jealous. Not jealous, I don’t even know the word, but I would try and like get into all of your business.”

Kate shared another story, explaining how she had been trying to hide a Valentine’s Day balloon delivery from Rio’s children. She said the situation ‘spiralled out of control’ as the youngsters tried to say their new step mum had ‘locked them in a room’.

Tate tried to explain his actions, telling Kate: “I was just in such a confused state of mind. I didn’t know what was going on. Dad didn’t really like surprise us with things like that.

“So that was like a bit of a weird thing like, “why am I being told to stay in here for five minutes?” You come back as if nothing’s happened.”

And he later went on: “I remember when I hated you. I hated you. And then we might do something good and then I would flip straight away back into loving mode and then I’d have to almost lie about what I did before to get myself out of it.

“I felt so guilty for liking Kate and loving Kate. I felt guilty for my mum’s family, for my mum.

The feelings lasted for a number of years, but Tate now admits the pair have a great relationship. And Kate admitted she fondly remembers the moment she felt their relationship blossoming.

“I remember the day it changed, and you were like ‘that’s my step mum’, I was like ‘oh my god, I’m not his aunt anymore’.”
