Kate Garraway has opened up about her boyfriend, Liam Halligan, for the first time at the Chelsea Flower Show, a week on from the pair’s new relationship going public.
Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway has spoken about her new relationship for the first time – saying: “It is lovely.”
The presenter, 59, was seen supporting Liam Halligan last week at an event that saw him cycle from London to Paris in 24 hours to raise money for Duchenne UK, sparking romance rumours as the pair cuddled up to one another and sported enormous grins.
Liam is a Irish-British economist and journalist who presents The Telegraph’s weekly Planet Normal podcast and was reportedly friendly with Kate’s late husband Derek Draper. Liam candidly shed light on their romance in a piece for the Spectator just last week, revealing it was early days but there is a “definite spark”.
Now, speaking at the Chelsea Flower Show, Kate has now opened up about the relationship for the very first time telling The Mirror: “It is lovely. I suppose it is!”
She admitted that they’ve barely had much time together, and she was keen to keep tight lipped for fear of “jinxing” anything. She said: “We basically haven’t really had time for a proper date! I don’t want to jinx it! I don’t want to say anything because I will jinx it! I will jinx it. We all love an Irishman don’t we?”
Kate was widowed in January 2024, when her husband Derek Draper died after a long battle of Covid. He was a political lobbyist and psychotherapist, and married Kate in 2005. The couple had two children together named Darcey, 20, and Billy, 16.
The presenter helped to create various programmes about her husband’s condition and long covid, and since his death has gone on to star in The Traitors: Celebrity, The Masked Singer, she is also still the host of Life Stories, after taking over for Piers Morgan in 2022.
When asked if she and Liam had plans to set up some “proper dates,” she admitted that Liam had been asking her the very same question. “He says to me, ‘Now we’re in the papers, is there are a chance we can actually have some dates?’ But my mum and dad have not been very well so I’ve been really consumed by that.
“It’s been tricky and I’ve just been doing that this weekend. My dad was supposed to be with me actually [at Chelsea] but he’s not well enough. I’m very lucky to have both of them and I know it’s normal [part of ageing].”
She agreed that her romance was a bit of light relief: “Yes. It’s lovely. And it’s lovely to have you all caring!” Kate also spoke about the state of her own garden while at the garden show, confessing that despite finding the hobby therapeutic, her’s is currently “shameful”.
Kate said: “I love gardening. My garden is shameful at the moment – I haven’t been out in it properly because I’ve been dealing with stuff from home. It’s lovely.
“There’s something magical and comforting about planting things and watching them come up but I’m a big fan of weeds, things looking slightly crazy although you do need a bit of structure. But I love it. There’s something about getting your hands dirty. I’m a Taurian earth sign which means you like to get your hands dirty.”
