Princess Kate once let slip what really happens during at-home rugby matches with her three children, including eldest son Prince George.
In January, the Princess of Wales welcomed the World Cup-winning Red Roses England women’s rugby team to Windsor Castle to mark their September 2025 triumph.
While chatting with the players and their coach, Kate – who serves as patron of the Rugby Football Union – commended their victory and described the “amazing achievement,” telling the world champions: “You’ve really inspired all the new generation (that) perhaps might not even have thought rugby was for them.”
The Red Roses defeated Canada 33-13 in the final before a record-breaking crowd of 81,885 spectators at a packed Twickenham, clinching a third World Cup title for England after previous victories in 2014 and 1994.
Kate added: “I think it really showed how accessible rugby is to so many types of girls, in different parts of the country.” When questioned whether her daughter played the sport, the princess replied: “Charlotte is playing rugby but at home with the family, so she isn’t yet at school, and I was asking how many schools are actually incorporating (rugby).”
“Rugby is so accessible, Louis is playing touch rugby and it’s such a great game. Actually, they shouldn’t necessarily push boys and girls in particular sports too early.”
Kate then left the rugby team in fits of laughter with her frank admission about Prince George, saying: “Obviously as they get physically stronger – George now, if we play at home, I do not want to get tackled by George – but, up to a certain age, I think it’s great.”
The Princess of Wales has been a passionate supporter of the Red Roses for some time, having followed their World Cup journey and attended a fixture, watching from the stands as they defeated Australia in Brighton during a pool match, before joining the squad for a celebratory sing-song in the changing rooms afterwards.
Sports Personality of the Year nominee Ellie Kildunne playfully teased Kate about the cowboy hat she donned when entering the dressing room and later revealed the princess had participated in a cowboy lasso dance with several of the players.
The Windsor Castle gathering marked Kate’s first individual engagement of 2026, and numerous royal enthusiasts were thrilled when footage from outside the castle revealed the princess had driven herself to the event.
Footage circulated on social media showed the Princess of Wales pulling up behind the wheel of a dark vehicle and getting out in the rain while holding an umbrella, accompanied by a gentleman. The footage sparked considerable fan reaction online, with one post on X declaring: “The Princess of Wales drove herself to Windsor Castle this afternoon to host a reception for the England Women’s rugby team – in an Alexander McQueen suit and stilettos. Iconic”.
A further admirer commented: “So amazing she doesn’t require people to drive her and can easily do it herself.” While another awestruck fan gushed: “Driving in stilettos – respect right there!”
