Actress Kavya Thapar, who is busy promoting her upcoming film Nenu Ready, recalled a hilarious incident from the sets of her debut Telugu film Ee Maaya Peremito that left everyone in splits.
Having arrived from Mumbai with no knowledge of Telugu, Kavya found herself confused by a word she kept hearing on set—”Randi.” In Hindi, the word has an offensive meaning, leaving the actress shocked every time someone used it casually.
The misunderstanding reached its peak when a crew member knocked on the door of her vanity van and loudly called out, “Randi!” asking her to report to the set for the next shot. Kavya and her mother were stunned, believing the crew member had insulted her.
Disturbed by the incident, Kavya immediately approached producer Divya Vijay to complain. However, instead of being upset, the producer burst into laughter before explaining the cultural mix-up.
In Telugu, “Randi” is a respectful invitation meaning “Please come,” similar to saying “Aaiye” or “Aao ji” in Hindi. It has no connection whatsoever to the offensive Hindi word Kavya had interpreted it as.
Once the meaning was explained, Kavya couldn’t stop laughing at the misunderstanding. Looking back, she says the incident became one of her fondest memories from her first Telugu film and an important lesson in understanding the language and its cultural nuances.
