Keeley Hawes played Lady Agnes Holland in two seasons of BBC period drama Upstairs Downstairs, which is now on Netflix
Keeley Hawes opened up about her high-profile divorce.
Upstairs Downstairs has climbed into the UK Top 10 streaming rankings on Netflix, with the period drama – which originally broadcast on the BBC in 2010 – crafted by Call the Midwife writer Heidi Thomas. The programme serves as a continuation of the original 1970s series, picking up six years after its predecessor concluded.
Continuing the saga of 165 Eaton Place, Keeley Hawes portrayed the property’s new proprietor, Lady Agnes Holland, across both seasons. Enthusiasts are eager to discover more about the 50 year old performer, who gained prominence through her role as Zoe Reynolds in the BBC sensation Spooks.
Here’s everything worth knowing about the star’s past relationships.
Who was Keeley Hawes’ first husband?
The London-born Hawes initially captured public attention during the 1990s with supporting appearances in programmes including Heartbeat and Our Mutual Friend.
She wed cartoonist Spencer McCallum in December 2001, and they welcomed a son, Myles, though she departed the Surrey residence they’d shared.
The pair had been in a relationship for four years, with speculation suggesting she’d left him for her present husband.
Coverage from the weekend magazine Night & Day quoted the actress stating: “The most painful thing was that Spencer and I were such good friends.
“I was in my early twenties when I met him. We were best, best friends, then the lines got blurred. We had Myles, and getting married seemed like the natural thing to do.
“When I decided to leave my husband, nothing had happened between Matthew and me. I’m sure nobody would believe we never had an affair, but we really didn’t.
“It wasn’t love at first sight. It was a slow burn. It started as just a feeling, and then very suddenly, at the end of it all, I realised I’d fallen in love with him.”
She went on to reveal that she still keeps on good terms with Spencer and his family, having previously told The Standard: “Spencer’s parents have been phenomenal with my children. And Spencer is a great friend of my family now. We’re all grown-ups.”
Who is Keeley Hawes married to now?
Hawes tied the knot with Matthew Macfadyen, her Spooks co-star, in November 2004, and the couple share a son and daughter together.
Macfadyen, 51, shot to fame playing Mr Darcy in the beloved 2005 film adaptation of Pride & Prejudice.
The acclaimed actor is also widely recognised for his roles in Succession and, naturally, Spooks, where he portrayed Tom Quinn.
Opening up to The Independent about the early days of their romance, she recalled: “Matthew just came straight out with it and said, ‘I love you,’ in the rain one day. I thought, ‘Oh dear, here we go’.”
Full of admiration for her husband, she gushed: “I think he is absolutely brilliant in Pride & Prejudice and it’s very difficult to judge your own partner, I find it almost impossible.
“But I watch that and I think he’s such a brilliant, generous actor to work with – and to watch. He’s really wonderful. And I don’t think anybody’s very good really.”
She wed Macfadyen at Richmond-upon-Thames register office while seven months pregnant.
Upstairs Downstairs is available to stream on Netflix.
