Just two days after making his season debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers, utility Kiké Hernández is back on the injured list with no timeline for return.

Hernández exited the Dodgers’ game against the Colorado Rockies with a left oblique injury. The Dodgers placed him on the 10-day IL ahead of the series finale on Wednesday, and an MRI showed a “significant tear” in Hernández’s oblique, according to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.

Hernández is expected to be out six to eight weeks but that timeline could vary.

“You don’t really know what the timeline is, but it’s certainly warranting an IL stint,” Roberts said, per the Los Angeles Times.

Hernández Feels Guilty For Taking A Roster Spot

In addition to disappointment, Hernández said he feels guilty for taking a roster spot only to go back on the injured list a few days later. To make room for Hernández, the Dodgers designated Santiago Espinal for assignment.

“Yeah, I mean, frustrating to say the least. … Not just because I missed time, but me coming back got somebody off the roster. Those types of things. I was only able to give the team four at-bats. Yeah, tough. I feel pretty defeated right now,” Hernández said, per MLB.

Espinal ultimately cleared waivers and will remain within the Dodgers’ organization. Los Angeles also recalled Alex Freeland from Triple-A after placing Hernández on the IL. The Dodgers optioned Freeland to make room for shortstop Mookie Betts on May 11.
