King Charles and the Duchess of Sussex were reportedly once close, and the King even had a unique nickname for Meghan which is said to reflect his admiration for her toughness and resilience
Members of the Royal Family have long been known to use peculiar nicknames for one another, with each unique moniker carrying a touching backstory. And while many of the senior working royals have distinctive names they go by in private, there’s one particularly odd nickname that has consistently captured the interest of keen royal watchers.
While Meghan Markle and Prince Harry departed from royal duties six years ago, there was a period when she appeared rather close to her in-laws, particularly her father-in-law, King Charles. When Meghan first met the King, he was reportedly thoroughly impressed by her confidence and resilience.
The bond between Meghan and Charles developed over time, with Charles even offering to accompany Meghan down the aisle at her 2018 wedding, after her own father was unable to make it to the Windsor ceremony.
Ahead of the ceremony, a royal source emerged to reveal the distinctive name Charles had given Meghan, and disclosed the unusual yet meaningful reasoning behind it.
In royal expert Katie Nicholl’s book The New Royals, she details how Charles had long been impressed by Meghan’s strength of character and bestowed upon her an appropriate nickname to capture this, as Nicholl wrote: “Charles reportedly nicknamed his future daughter-in-law ‘Tungsten’ because of her toughness and resilience.”
This isn’t the first time Charles’ original nickname for Meghan has emerged, as back in June 2018, the Daily Mail reported that Charles dubbed Meghan ‘Tungsten’, a variety of metal, owing to her being “tough and unbending”.
A source told the Mail on Sunday at the time: “Prince Charles admires Meghan for her strength and the backbone she gives Harry, who needs a tungsten-type figure in his life as he can be a bit of a softy. It’s become a term of endearment.”
Meghan’s relationship with her father-in-law became fractured when she and Harry quit their royal roles in 2020 in search of financial and personal independence from the Firm, and suffered even further as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex levelled accusations against the Firm.
However, with Harry and Meghan now residing back in the UK, Meghan and her father-in-law have the chance to mend their relationship as the Duke continues to build bridges with the King.
When the Sussexes were in the UK in July, Harry and Meghan, along with their children Archie and Lilibet, had a private meeting with King Charles and Queen Camilla in Highgrove, marking the first time Charles had seen Meghan and his grandchildren in four years.
