Kolkata: The Kolkata Police took away a security gadget from Trinamul Congress scion Abhishek Banerjee’s palatial residence, Shantiniketan, at Harish Mukherjee Road in Kalighat on Monday. In the afternoon, some cops turned up at the address in plain clothes and went inside.
Others in uniform were present outside. Many local residents thought it was a police raid after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation served Mr Banerjee last week a notice about his property and its building plan. The team of cops later came out with a big monitor, which was apparently being used in screening CCTV footage for security purposes, at Mr Banerjee’s residence.
They left in a car then without saying anything. According to sources, the move was part of gradual withdrawal of Z-plus security cover of the Diamond Harbour TMC MP after the change in government.
It is not clear whether Mr Banerjee was present inside during the cops’ visit. Earlier, the city police removed its security apparatus including guardrails and barriers alongwith personnel from Shantiniketan which had become a fortress with a constant vigil during the TMC-rule.
