Udupi: Police have arrested a man in connection with a theft reported at the spot of a fatal road accident in Kollur village limits of Byndoor taluk, where two women pilgrims from Kerala had died earlier this month.

The accident occurred on May 17 at Dali in Kollur village. Kollur Police initially registered a case of accidental death following the road mishap in which two women lost their lives.

However, police later received a complaint from Srikumar alleging that gold ornaments worn by one of the deceased women had been stolen from the accident site. Based on the complaint, a separate case was registered under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Following the direction of Deputy Superintendent of Police HD Kulkarni and Byndoor Circle Inspector Shivakumar, Kollur police launched an investigation using CCTV footage, photographs taken at the spot by the public, and technical inputs.

Within 24 hours, police traced and arrested the accused, identified as Hemanth (40), a resident of Kalyanigudde in Kollur village.

Police said stolen gold ornaments, including a ring weighing 3.910 grams, a bangle weighing 3.450 grams, and a chain weighing 7.160 grams, collectively valued at about Rs 2.07 lakh, were recovered from his possession.

The accused was produced before court and remanded to judicial custody.
