Nalgonda: Roads and buildings minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy on Sunday announced that irrigation facility would be provided to two crops in Nalgonda district by completing the Srisaliam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel.
Inaugurating the newly constructed Gram Panchayat office building at Kanchanpalli in Nalgonda mandal, he said his sole aim is to complete the SLBC tunnel works and provide irrigation facility to nearly four lakh acres in Nalgonda district by August 2028. Further, he promised irrigation through the Brahmana Vellemula Project to every acre in his Nalgonda assembly constituency.
The minister underlined that agriculture and rural infrastructure development are the top priority for the Congress government. He maintained that reconstruction of SLBC tunnel and canal system is under progress with the aim of making Nalgonda drought-free and agriculturally prosperous.
Venkat Reddy recalled that SLBC tunnel works had begun in 2007 by bringing machinery from United States of America when Congress had been in power in the combined Andhra Pradesh. After the formation of Telangana state, BRS came to power in 2014. Then chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao put the works of SLBC tunnel in cold storage.
The minister emphasised that had the works been continued the tunnel could have been completed in two years by spending ₹1,000 crore. However, after the Congress came to power in Telangana in 2023, works on SLBC tunnel have resumed and would be completed by August 2028, providing irrigation for two crops.
Venkat Reddy said the ₹11-crore Kanchanpalli Lift Irrigation Scheme would be completed by Dasara, ensuring irrigation to every acre in the village. He said he would personally distribute silk sarees to all women of the village during the Dasara celebrations. He assured that Kanchanpalli would be developed into a model village with improved roads, drainage, drinking water supply, irrigation facilities, and a modern government school.
Referring to the state government sanctioning ₹300 crore for the drinking water scheme in Nalgonda Municipal Corporation, he said 24-hour safe drinking water would be supplied to every house in the city soon.
Speaking on the occasion, district collector B. Chandrasekhar requested farmers to avoid paddy and cultivate alternative crops in view of the deficit rainfall due to the El Niño effect. He said the state government is establishing one Telangana Model Public School in every assembly constituency of Nalgonda district to strengthen public education. He appealed to villagers to maintain sanitation by segregating wet and dry waste.
On the day, the minister inaugurated a 33/11 KV substation and distributed cheques of Kalyana Lakshmi to beneficiaries at a programme held in the Tahsildar office of Nalgonda.
