Hyderabad: Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy on Saturday instructed officials to create awareness among farmers informing that the water in the Nagarjunasagar Project (NSP) is only sufficient for drinking due to El Nino, and since there is no possibility of water coming from it, they should cultivate wet crops instead of paddy under any circumstances.
He said that even if Nagarjunasagar is filled, there is no way to fill the ponds, and since ground water is already decreasing in boreholes, there is a need for officials and public representatives to stand by farmers in these difficult times and ensure that they cultivate wet crops.
The Minister attended the District Irrigation Advisory Council meeting held at the Nalgonda District Collectorate meeting hall on Saturday as the chief guest.
He said that currently the water in the Nagarjunasagar project is in dead storage, that even though water comes from Srisailam, there is no situation to irrigate crops, and that the existing water is sufficient for drinking water till June 2027, keeping all this in mind, he urged farmers to sow wet crops.
