Despite a string of flops, young actor Varun Tej has managed to draw decent openings for his latest horror-fantasy comedy Korean Kanagaraju in the two Telugu states.
“The film has garnered around Rs 3 crore share on day one including premier show collections and still has a long way to go,” says a leading exhibitor. “The film generated some buzz before its release and there were decent crowds at several theatres, although only a few centres reported houseful shows.”
According to the exhibitor, the comedy appears to be the film’s biggest strength, while the fantasy elements have received a more mixed response. “Audiences are lapping up comedian Satya’s one-liners and antics. He has almost stolen the show,” he adds.
Varun Tej was looking for a strong comeback after films such as Operation Valentine and Matka, and chose a horror-comedy to bounce back into the reckoning. “The film is largely set in Seoul, Korea, and the ghost story offers some good visuals,” the exhibitor points out.
Directed by Merlapaka Gandhi, Korean Kanagaraju blends ghostly elements with comedy and is set against the backdrop of Penukonda in Rayalaseema. The film has reportedly been sold for around Rs 17 crore in the two Telugu states.
“Now, the collections need to hold well over the next few days. The weekend will be crucial in determining whether the film can recover its investment,” he concludes.
