Jenner attended the premiere of All’s Fair season 2 at the Rome Film Festival in Italy with the show’s cast, including her daughter, Kim. The mom of six styled the vintage piece with white gloves, satin white flats, and a diamond necklace. The black velvet Scorpio Cape has an ivory silk lining, and glittering scorpions are embroidered across the sweeping piece’s chest.
However, instead of praise, Kris got a lot of flak for wearing the iconic outfit. Many social media users called out the Kardashians for copying the style of iconic stars rather than creating something of their own. Many users questioned why Jenner and her daughter keep wearing clothing and accessories associated with deceased celebrities.
One commenter brought up Kardashian’s previous fashion choices, writing, “They love having and collecting and wearing dead people’s stuff. Kim even got, like, a napkin with Marilyn Monroe’s lipstick kiss on it. It’s a bit strange.” Another commented, “Desperate to compete where they don’t compare. All about Elizabeth Taylor’s iconic Scorpion Cape
According to Vogue, Elizabeth Taylor wore the Tiziani Roma design Scorpion Cape to Princess Grace of Monaco’s 40th birthday celebrations in 1969. Grace, a Scorpio, hosted the famous Scorpion Ball in Monte Carlo, where only Scorpios were invited; the party had roughly 60 guests.
Guests could attend if they were a Scorpio or married to a Scorpio. Taylor, a Pisces, attended the event with her husband, Richard Burton, a Scorpio. Taylor topped off the custom piece with the 69.42-carat Taylor-Burton Diamond, a gift from then-husband Richard Burton.
The original cape went up for auction at Christie’s in 2011, ultimately fetching USD 74,500. Jenner bought the cape at auction and Kim Kardashian herself confirmed it on social media as she penned:
“Fun fact about the cape my mom is wearing. It belonged to Elizabeth Taylor, and my mom now owns it and graciously let me wear it in All’s Fair. After Ryan [Murphy, the show’s creator] heard the story of Elizabeth Taylor wearing it to Grace Kelly’s Scorpion Ball, naturally, he made sure to write an episode about Allura Grant [Kardashian’s character] throwing her own Scorpion Ball, and I’m the luckiest girl to have borrowed it from my mom.”
The Kardashian women are known for wearing dresses once owned by iconic stars. In May 2022, Kim Kardashian wore Marilyn Monroe’s famous crystal-covered gown to the Met Gala. Monroe had worn the dress while singing Happy Birthday, Mr. President to John F. Kennedy in 1962. She also bought Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ Cartier watch at a Christie’s auction for USD 379,500 in 2017.
