Kris Marshall, who rose to fame as Nick Harper in the BBC sitcom My Family, teased what lies ahead for popular crime drama Beyond Paradise, and addressed his own future on the show
Kris Marshall has opened up about his future on Beyond Paradise and shed light on the plot request he continues to put to BBC bosses, dubbing it a “mad little show”. Kris, who many will know for his role as Nick Harper in the BBC sitcom My Family, takes on the lead role of Detective Humphrey Goodman in the cosy crime drama.
Now in its fourth season, Beyond Paradise returns to our screens tonight, and Kris has teased what lies ahead for the series and his own career, as radio host Chris Evans suggested BBC producers could “stir it up”
Kris made the remarks on the April 20 broadcast of The Chris Evans Show on Virgin Radio. In the interview, Chris probed him about taking on other roles, but the actor hinted that nothing else is in the pipeline right now, apart from filming Beyond Paradise’s next season.
He said: “I’m really happy where I am at the moment. Coz, yeah…coz I love the show, and I love the storylines. And it’s quite a mad little show, and I love it.”
Chris asked whether they could “stir it up” in season five, and Kris revealed he and his co-stars are about to start shooting — teasing there’d be “some stuff gonna spice it up”, though he couldn’t say more.
Requests for more details rang out in the studio, with one person pleading: “Tell us.” Initially, Kris resisted but did say: “Well, I mean, how long can a marriage last?”, in a possible nod to Humphrey and wife Martha Lloyd’s (played by Sally Bretton) nuptials.
People in the studio erupted in celebration of the potential drama, but Kris followed up: “I’m kidding, I’m kidding.” Chris teased the actor that he was “so not kidding”, to which the Love Actually star confirmed that he wouldn’t “give away” spoilers.
Moving the chat on a bit, the radio host asked if Kris had ever tried to “wheedle” things that he enjoys into the plot. Kris went on to say: “I’m always like, ‘Let’s get us a surfing episode. We haven’t had one of those yet’.
“Coz we’re on the south coast, and surfing is mainly on the north coast.” Asked whether he takes his surfboard to use in his downtime, Kris confirmed that he does and that he owns three of them.
In related news, Kris has addressed the “complaints” some fans have made about the show. Beyond Paradise has become something of an international hit, drawing viewers from North America, Canada and Australia.
On the TV Reload podcast in 2025, host Benjamin Morris said it was viewers in Australia who had an issue.
He explained: “You’re on a show now that’s so popular that when I was doing the research for this, there were people in Australia complaining, ‘We’re delayed’, I can’t remember what exact time.
“You know you’re on a good show when the complaint is, ‘We ain’t getting it fast enough’.”
Kris replied: “I’ve read a couple of those complaints myself. I think the last series, season three, ended about two or three weeks ago, so a few weeks behind the UK but not too much really and we will begin filming again soon.”
Catch Beyond Paradise tonight (April 24) on BBC One, from 8pm to 9pm.
