Kristen Welker Had Infertility Problem, Underwent IVF, Blessed With Kids Via Surrogacy, ‘My Uterus’

Meet the Press moderator, Kristen Welker, spoke about one of the most personal chapters in her life. Kristen and her husband, John Hughes, got married back in March 2017 and tried to have kids. However, the couple had faced infertility issues. Kristen had gained a lot of strength when she decided to speak about it publicly.

Kristen Welker had to undergo fertility treatment for months before she and John Hughes welcomed their first child, daughter Margot, on June 12, 2021. It was via surrogacy that the couple was blessed with their daughter. The American TV Journalist revealed the highs and lows she had post one round of in vitro fertilisation (IVF). This was because her uterus lining was very thin to carry a baby, and she shared in the TODAY segment that:

“It was really some of the most difficult months that I can remember. I was going to the doctor in between live shots at work and just feeling like, ‘You’re a failure.’”

Meet the Press moderator, Kristen Welker, in an interview with PEOPLE, revealed in 2025 that one in six people struggle with infertility. It was important to stop and think about what that means, and draw a focus on the importance of resources. She believed in having a conversation about infertility so that people could find ways to increase resources for people who are struggling.

Kristen and her husband, John Hughes, had made the decision to try for their first baby via a gestational carrier. She revealed that for her, it was easy to share on her fertility story as he wanted to be honest with the audience who welcomed her into their living rooms on their TV sets, every day. Kristen also revealed that she wanted to celebrate the journey that her daughter had coming to this Earth, and she continued:

“And also, because I wanted to celebrate the journey that my daughter had coming to this earth. I want my daughter to feel very proud of how she’s here, the extent to which her dad and I loved her so much before she was born, before we could even conceive of her.”

Kristen further revealed that both the surrogates who helped her bring her kids into the world are in contact with the journalist. Kristen shared that she does reach out to them on their birthdays and holidays. They send each other pictures and are in constant communication. Kristen revealed that both surrogates are like family to her. She feels just so grateful to both of them for the incredible gifts they gave her and her husband. Kristen was vocal with her infertility journey.

Kristen revealed that she knew many who were going through something similar, and they felt less alone as Kristen’s story was shared.
