NASCAR star Kyle Larson’s son Owen comforted Brexton Busch during an emotional tribute at the Coca-Cola 600 to his late father Kyle Busch, who died Thursday after severe pneumonia led to sepsis.
Before a pre-race moment of silence Sunday, 11-year-old Owen walked over to Brexton, also 11, on the Charlotte Motor Speedway infield and put his arm around him, as seen in a viral video of the heartwarming moment.
Brexton, who wore a hat with his dad’s No. 8, was standing with his mom, Samantha, as NASCAR president Steve O’Donnell led the tribute to the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion.
The Amazon Prime broadcast broadcast went quiet on lap 8 in Busch’s honor and fans in the stands held up eight fingers.
Busch and Samantha’s daughter Lennix, 4, was there, along Busch’s parents Tom and Gaye, and his older brother, NASCAR Hall of Famer Kurt Busch.
Busch died at 41 after on May 21, hours after being hospitalized for a “severe illness,” his family said in a joint statement with Richard Childress Racing and NASCAR.
He was preparing for the Coca-Cola 600 when he became ill.
The Busch family shared Saturday that he died of severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis.
“The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications,” the family said in a statement. “The Family asks for continued understanding and privacy during this difficult time.”
Richard Childress Racing has reserved Busch’s No. 8 for Brexton when he is ready to inherit, should he pursue a NASCAR career.
