Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers have a special teams problem.

Particularly at the kicker position.

After the 49ers’ 26-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Shanahan said he doesn’t know if the team will work out other kicking options during the team’s bye week.

“I don’t know I haven’t talked to anybody about that, we’ll probably discuss on the plane,” Shanahan said.

Kicker Eddy Piñeiro had his fourth extra point miss this season after Kyle Juszczyk had a 1-yard touchdown reception with 5:05 left in the fourth quarter, putting San Francisco at a 26-20 deficit.

During the broadcast of Piñeiro’s extra point attempt, Fox color commentator Greg Olsen admitted that he jinxed the 49ers kicker when he said, “Piñeiro has already missed an extra point here today,” before he took the field after Juszczyk’s touchdown.

Piñeiro didn’t actually miss the kick, and Olsen immediately caught it and said it was Falcons kicker Nick Folk who missed one in the second quarter.

Piñeiro ended up botching the kick, and Fox play-by-play commentator Kenny Albert told Olsen, “You jinxed him.”

Olsen responded and said, “I just did the ultimate jinx. It’s like I had a prophecy.”

After Monday night’s 23-17 victory against the Washington Commanders, Shanahan told reporters that his kicker has “got to make them,” after he was asked about Piñeiro missing an extra point attempt in the first quarter.

Through seven games, Piñeiro has missed seven kicks, three field goals, and four extra points.

Shanahan admitted that he’s frustrated with the 49ers’ special teams, but it’s not over the top.

“It’s about equal with the rest of our team right now,” Shanahan said.
