Lamar Jackson will be placed on injured reserve after he suffered a thumb injury on the first play of the Baltimore Ravens‘ 36-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
An enticing quarterback battle between two-time MVP Jackson and 2024 MVP Allen never materialised as Jackson did not return, with backup Tyler Huntley then also suffering an injury.
That left the Ravens to rely on their emergency third-stringer, undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano, who was always fighting an uphill battle.
Allen threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns as the Bills cruised to victory, improving to 6-1 as the Ravens dropped to 4-3.
The day then got worse for the Ravens as it was subsequently reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Jackson requires surgery and will be placed on IR.
That could well doom the Ravens’ hopes of reaching the postseason, with Baltimore bottom of a hugely competitive AFC North, which is led by the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2) after they crushed the Cleveland Browns (5-3) 27-6.
The Cincinnati Bengals are on the Steelers’ heels at 5-2 having survived an overtime thriller with the Tennessee Titans, quarterback Joe Burrow accounting for six touchdowns, throwing five and rushing for the game-winner in a 43-36 victory, though he was also intercepted three times
The Detroit Lions ended the Minnesota Vikings’ unbeaten start to the season as they handed their NFC North rivals their first loss with a 19-15 win at Ford Field.
Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown for the Lions, who took the lead for good on Jared Goff’s fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Jameson Williams. However, the win was marred by what appeared to be a serious head/neck injury suffered by Lions linebacker Jack Campbell.
Bucs make bizarre history
Elsewhere, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers achieved a bizarre piece of NFL history with their 16-0 win over their NFC South rivals the Atlanta Falcons.
Sodden conditions in Tampa made passing near impossible, but that was not a barrier for the Buccaneers, who largely eschewed attempting to throw it.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield failed to complete any of his three pass attempts, but it mattered not as three field goals and a Bucky Irving rushing touchdown powered the Bucs to victory.
Their triumph saw the Buccaneers become the first team since the 1974 Bills to win a game without completing a pass.
Cardinals stun Cowboys in wild finish
The Arizona Cardinals pulled off a remarkable comeback to stun the Dallas Cowboys 33-30 in overtime.
Arizona trailed 17-3 in the third quarter, but found life after quarterback Jacoby Brissett was benched for Gardner Minshew.
Dallas looked to have the game in hand after kicking a field goal to go up 30-24 with little over a minute remaining, only for Minshew to lead what appeared to be a game-winning drive as he connected with Michael Wilson with six seconds remaining to tie things up.
However, Chad Ryland incredibly missed the extra point, handing a Dallas a reprieve.
It was one the Cowboys wasted, though, and Ryland redeemed himself with a decisive 42-yard kick.
The Indianapolis Colts concluded a week that saw them start a fire sale by trading guard Quenton Nelson and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner by suffering a crushing 42-7 defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars, while the Las Vegas Raiders won a shootout with the New York Jets 38-33.
