'Lanterns' Ep 5 Ending Explained, The Debt From The Past And How The 2016 Timeline Closes

Lanterns Episode 5 is where every secret in Rushville finally comes out. What started as a search for a shapeshifting killer turns into an all-out battle between ‘Hal Jordan’, ‘John Stewart’, ‘Zoe,’ and ‘Antaan.’ The episode confirms the Manhunter’s identity, explains its past with the Guardians and ‘Abin Sur’, and brings the debt with ‘Kerry Kane’ full circle. With three deaths and a choice that ends the 2016 timeline, the finale sets up what happens next in 2026.

Why does ‘John Stewart’ kill ‘Zoe,’ and ‘William Macon’ die in Rushville?

The show opens with a past scene that explains the debt between ‘Kerry Kane’ and ‘Zoe.’ A young ‘Kerry’ has a car breakdown in Rushville. Two men in a diner say their boss in Gotham wants her dead and they need her pinky finger as proof.

‘Zoe’ appears and kills one man. She gives ‘Kerry’ a switchblade to cut her own finger. ‘Kerry’ sends the finger to Gotham. ‘Zoe’ then heals the finger back with her power. She says ‘Kerry’ will owe her protection one day. This explains why ‘Kerry’ protects ‘Zoe’ during the whole case.

In the present, ‘John Stewart’ is badly burned after the car crash from episode four. ‘Zoe’ brings him to the hospital. She uses a drop of her own blood to help a machine heal his tissue and admits she is the Manhunter. The Manhunters were made by the Guardians before the Green Lantern Corps and were meant to be peacekeepers. Their methods were too brutal, so the Guardians tried to shut them off.

‘Zoe’ says she was the only one who survived. She lived as a fugitive and joined many alien societies. One of them was the society of ‘Antaan,’ who says that the ‘Manhunter’ caused a holocaust against his people. The episode adds more context. ‘Zoe’ and ‘Antaan’ were once in love, and they failed to have a child. Her programming made her bring justice by killing.

Later, ‘Abin Sur’ captured her while taking her to the Guardians, and his ship crashed near Rushville. ‘John’ guesses that she killed ‘Abin Sur’ because she feared he would tell the Guardians. She confirms it, following which the ring first went to ‘John’s’ father and then to ‘Hal Jordan’. ‘Zoe’ tells ‘John’ she will kill ‘Hal’ so ‘John’ can take the ring. ‘John’ does not trust anyone now.

How does ‘Hal Jordan’ trick ‘Antaan,’ and why does ‘John Stewart’ give up the ring?

‘Hal Jordan’ wants to remove ‘John Stewart’ from the fight so he can capture the Manhunter alone. He wants to fix his reputation with the Guardians. He leaves ‘John’ in the crashed car, and he meets the aliens at the diner. He lies and says ‘William Macon’ is the Manhunter. This sends ‘Antaan’ and his forces to the ‘Macon’ ranch. They destroy the Weenie and the alien weapons.

‘Antaan’ confronts ‘Macon,’ who pretends that he is the Manhunter to protect ‘Zoe.’ ‘Antaan’ kills him and cuts out his heart, which does not crystallize. This proves ‘Macon’ is human. ‘Hal’ tries to track ‘Zoe’ with a ring-powered hologram on sentry protocol. He finds her near the town edge.

‘Zoe’s’ goons knock down the water tower that is full of black smoke, and it stops Lantern power. ‘Hal’s’ ring is low on charge. He fights out and flies a helicopter back to the motel to recharge with the lantern. ‘John’ escapes the hospital and takes a sniper rifle from a gun store. He tells his parents on the phone that he will take the ring. He ambushes ‘Hal’ at the motel, and they fight for the ring. ‘Zoe’ fires a satellite laser at them, and ‘Hal’ uses the last charge to shield them.

‘John’ runs away but only to find a sniper spot. ‘Zoe’ arrives to kill ‘Hal,’ and ‘John’ shoots ‘Zoe’ in the head. He cuts out her heart, which crystallizes. This proves she was the last Manhunter. ‘Antaan’ tries to self-destruct to kill ‘Hal,’ which makes a tornado and throws ‘Antaan’ into the sky, where he explodes. ‘John’ takes the ring and the lantern and ‘Zoe’s’ heart to the diner. A Guardian is waiting, and she says the ring looks good on him.

‘John’ says he feels empty. He says ‘Hal’ betrayed his code and oath to keep the ring. He says he does not remember why he wanted it. He resents the Guardians for making him use violence to claim it. He places the ring on the counter and walks away. This ends the 2016 story. The show will now move to 2026 and must explain ‘Hal’s’ death and why ‘Guy Gardner’ becomes the new Lantern.
