Lata Mangeshkar and singer-songwriter and former Assam politician Bhupen Hazarika had an infamous relationship. It strained his bond with his estranged wife, Priyamvada Patel, and ultimately led to their separation. Almost a year after his death, in November 2012, the late legendary singer’s estranged wife opened up about the emotional toll she underwent during the affair between Bhupen and Lata.
In an interview with DY365, Priyamvada claimed that Lata Mangeshkar was “crazy” about Bhupen and that he wasn’t that invested in the affair. She recalled confronting him about their rendezvous and asking why he spent the night with Lata in the same room. Bhupen, at that time, allegedly told his estranged better half that sometimes things like that were needed for their careers.
Bhupen added that in India, if a musician wanted to gain popularity or make a name for themselves, they needed to be in Lata’s good books and have her sing their songs. His exact words, as shared by Priyamvada, were:
“Lata was crazy after him, and he told me Priyam in India if a musician wants to come up, his songs have to be sung by Lata Mangeshkar. I asked why should you be in the room with her the whole night. He said, ‘Ketiyaba koribo laage.’ (sometimes you have to do it).”
Lata and Bhupen’s alleged affair was infamous in his hometown, Assam. Additionally, in his autobiography Moi Eti Jajabor (I am a Nomad), he wrote about the presence of a famed Mumbai-based singer in his life. He also shared an instance when his estranged wife returned looking shattered after seeing off Lata at Kolkata airport. He asked her what the matter was, and she replied in their colloquial language, “Maanuhjone kotha eta koley bhaal nalagil.”
The line meant that Priyamvada didn’t like the way Lata spoke to her. A curious Bhupen asked what Lata had said to make her look so sad. Priyamvada replied, “She told me her love for you is no less than mine as your wife.”
Lata Mangeshkar reacted to Priyamvada Patel’s explosive comments about her affair with Bhupen Hazarika
After Priyamvada Patel’s interview was out, Lata Mangeshkar’s massive fanbase started pushing back against the former’s explosive comments about their favorite singer. Lata Mangeshkar herself threatened legal action against Priyamvada, claiming she was not romantically involved with her estranged husband, Bhupen Hazarika.
In a conversation with the media, Lata Mangeshkar admitted that she had no idea why Priyamvada said what she said and why she planned to malign her image in public. Lata stated:
“I am quite shocked at the lengths people can go to. I’ve met this lady only once in my life. I don’t know what she is talking about. I am definitely taking legal action.”
As for Bhupen and Priyamvada, they tied the knot in 1950 in the US and had one child together, a son named Tez Hazarika. After about 13 years of marriage, they separated but never formally divorced. Following their split, Priyamvada moved to Canada and lived separately for roughly 50 years until Bhupen Hazarika’s passing in 2011.
