Laura Dern is checking into The White Lotus. The Oscar winner and longtime collaborator of series creator Mike White is a very last-minute addition to the season four cast, after it was announced that Helena Bonham Carter had exited the production earlier this week.

Deadline reports that Dern will play a new character, believed to be central to the story, developed for her by White. This comes after the role originally written for Helena Bonham Carter had to be “rethought” and “rewritten” after filming had already commenced. “It had become apparent that the character … did not align once on set,” an HBO Max spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.

No details are yet known about the character, but the news is being received well by fans.

Dern has been a frontrunner in viewers’ dream casting predictions for some time – a powerhouse actor who can project strength and conviction, but also happily undercut those traits for comedic effect. It also doesn’t hurt that she has a large queer fan base, much like Jennifer Coolidge and Parker Posey who both played beloved camp characters in earlier seasons.

The most exciting aspect of her casting, however, is her past working relationship with Mike White. The pair created the 2011 HBO series Enlightened, which is widely considered a precursor to The White Lotus.

Dern’s lead character in Enlightened would fit in well with the crew from the first season of The White Lotus: a self-involved woman in her 40s who escaped her mundane job to swim with turtles in Hawaii and heal herself. Dern won a Golden Globe for her performance, but the show was largely underappreciated at the time.

The actor also starred in White’s 2007 film Year of the Dog, and has even made a prior cameo on The White Lotus. Dern voiced the wife of Dominic (Michael Imperioli) in the show’s second season, but never appeared on-screen.

This season of the award-winning series brings a new cast to the Cannes Film Festival, suggesting Dern will probably play a character in the entertainment industry.

The action will take place over the span of a week in and around two White Lotus hotels in France. Other cast members include British actor Steve Coogan, France’s Vincent Cassel (Black Swan), and Americans Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick), Sandra Bernhard (The King of Comedy) and Heather Graham (Boogie Nights).

Filming is expected to run until October this year, and while no release date has been announced, the show is expected to return to our screens in 2027. That leaves you plenty of time to catch up on Enlightened.
