Lauren Sánchez looked stunning as she arrived at the Met Gala in a midnight-blue Schiaparelli gown, but fans and critics had the same thing to say about her look

Lauren Sánchez turned heads as she arrived at this year’s Met Gala, but critics all voiced the same concern about her outfit. The American journalist, who co-sponsored the event alongside her billionaire husband Jeff Bezos, appeared in a midnight-blue mermaid gown with a dramatic plunging neckline and intricate beaded straps.

Arriving at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday evening, anticipation was at fever pitch – particularly given this year’s theme honouring the concept that “fashion is art”. Yet despite her polished look, numerous fans felt disappointed. While the gown was undoubtedly sophisticated, some said it didn’t quite fulfil the daring, imaginative requirements usually expected at the Met Gala – with several suggesting it appeared better suited to a conventional red carpet ceremony than fashion’s most avant-garde evening.

Speaking to presenter La La Anthony on the carpet, Lauren revealed the gown carried special significance. She confirmed it was created by Schiaparelli as homage to John Singer Sargent’s celebrated 1884 painting Madame X. “It’s a painting that’s actually in the Met,” she said.

But not everyone was persuaded. Turning to social media, one user expressed bluntly: “Lauren Sanchez: Miss. Babe this is the Met. Not a yacht christening in St Tropez.”

They continued: “Navy satin push-up gown is what you wear when your husband’s company is filing taxes, not when the theme is literally ‘Costume Art’.

“The little pearl shoulder thing is doing the work of ten people and losing. Anna Wintour visible in frame, in her actual peacock feather coat, looking like she’s already judging her.

“You can feel the side-eye through the screen. Verdict: 3/10. Bezos money, Boohoo vision.”

Another simply questioned: “Fashion is Art event and where is the ‘art’?”

Others echoed the same sentiment, with one writing: “With all that money she couldn’t buy creativity.”

While another said: “Looks like she’s going to the prom in 1992.”

One final critic put it bluntly: “What a miss. This is giving nothing.”

Yet while Lauren’s ensemble proved divisive, other stars threw themselves wholeheartedly into the theme. Heidi Klum — frequently crowned the ‘Queen of Halloween’ for her show-stopping outfits — turned heads by arriving as a marble statue.

Her daring ensemble immediately set tongues wagging, with one social media user remarking: “Well, you can’t say Heidi Klum doesn’t take a theme seriously.”

Though not everybody was won over, with another confessing the look was “scary as hell”.
