After seeing LeBron James seemingly enjoy his time in Philadelphia so far, NBA analyst Bill Simmons believes the former Lakers star looked “miserable” in Los Angeles. Simmons blamed James’ relationship with Luka Doncic after watching the 41-year-old’s on- and off-court chemistry with fellow Klutch Sports client Tyrese Maxey.
“He obviously has a great relationship with [Tyrese] Maxey,” Simmons said via NBABAse’s X. “I don’t think the relationship with Luka was good. And I think we can safely say that. LeBron last year seemed pretty miserable the whole season and knew it wasn’t his team.”
Simmons felt James was taken aback by the Lakers’ sudden shift from him to Doncic, whereas in Philly, he knew from the start it was Maxey’s team, and he willingly signed up for it.

After the Lakers acquired Doncic in a blockbuster trade in February 2025 for superstar Anthony Davis, Los Angeles catered more to Doncic’s needs than James.
They were aggressive in signing and trading for their targets, which wasn’t the case after James and Davis led them to a championship in 2020. Last season, the coaching staff also demanded that James make the biggest sacrifice and play as the No. 3 option behind Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
James accepted the role, but many felt it rubbed him the wrong way. While James would have accepted a No. 2 role, being asked to play an even smaller role behind Reaves was the final straw.
LeBron James admits he’s “more than happy” to choose Philadelphia
LeBron James entered the 2026 offseason with multiple options. He could have returned to the Lakers, or joined the Heat, Cavaliers, Warriors, or Timberwolves. However, James took his talents to Philadelphia against all odds.

He felt it was his best chance to win a championship. After scoring 20 points for the first time in a Sixers uniform on Friday against the Knicks and hitting the dagger in the 98-93 win, James admitted his true emotions on the 76ers.
“I’m having a great time… I’m more than happy that I made the decision to come here,” he said (via ESPN).
The 76ers improved to 5-1 that night and are 7-1 now. Concerns about five potential All-Stars playing together in the same lineup have been put to bed, as every star has become accustomed to his role.
LeBron James, in particular, has been as willing as ever. He’s averaging a career-low 16.2 points on 13.7 shot attempts per game. However, James’ primary role has been to guard the other team’s best forwards, rebound, and facilitate, which he’s doing efficiently.
James is averaging 7.0 rebounds and 7.3 assists. He’s holding opposing players to 27.5% shooting.
