LeBron James produced another remarkable performance as the Philadelphia 76ers beat the New York Knicks 98-93 in the NBA Cup, with the 41-year-old admitting he is still enjoying every moment of his record-breaking career.

James scored 20 points, grabbed nine rebounds and registered eight assists as Philadelphia improved to 5-1 for the season.

The veteran also delivered two crucial baskets in the closing stages, helping the Sixers overcome a late Knicks comeback and secure their fifth win of the campaign.

Philadelphia appeared to be in control after building an 11-point fourth-quarter lead, but Jalen Brunson’s step-back three-pointer brought New York level late on.

James responded immediately, backing down OG Anunoby before hitting a fadeaway jumper to restore the Sixers’ advantage.

He then converted a putback layup with 11.9 seconds remaining to put Philadelphia five points ahead and effectively seal the result.

“He’s been good, but that was his best game for sure,” Sixers coach Nick Nurse said afterwards.

Tyrese Maxey also praised James’ influence, describing his veteran team-mate as a “calming presence” in tight situations.

“At the end of the day, he’s LeBron James,” Maxey said. “So it’s just like he can do stuff like he did tonight, a couple of big buckets.”

LeBron breaks another NBA record and reflects on remarkable career

James’ 20-point performance was his first since joining Philadelphia and marked another historic milestone.

He has now scored at least 20 points in 68 games since turning 40, surpassing the combined total of every other player aged 40 or older in NBA history.

At 41 years and 304 days, he also equalled Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the fifth-oldest player to record a 20-point game.

Reflecting on his longevity, James admitted he never expected to remain at the highest level for 24 seasons.

“I’m definitely not going to lie to you and say that I knew it would be 24 years, that’s for damn sure,” he said.

“I’m having a great time,” James said.

“I’m a big-ass kid, to be completely honest, but these guys are great to be around, and I’m more than happy that I made the decision to come here.”
