Preview for Leeds v Tottenham
A month ago, Tottenham were bottom of the Premier League and Roberto De Zerbi was under serious pressure. Now they travel to Elland Road on Saturday lunchtime looking for a fourth straight league win, and there’s an overwhelming sense that things are finally coming together in North London.
Spurs beat Coventry 3-1, won 2-0 at Chelsea, and then beat 10-man Crystal Palace 2-0 last weekend, with Archie Gray and Jan Paul van Hecke on the scoresheet. That run has lifted them up to ninth, and they are now unbeaten in four league games.
Leeds are heading in the opposite direction. Daniel Farke’s side started the season unbeaten, but they have gone five league games without a win since, taking just three points from a possible 15. They lost to Arsenal and then 2-0 at Bournemouth last weekend, with draws against Manchester United and Sunderland in between. They are 12th with 11 points, one point behind Spurs.
Despite their bad run, Farke insists there is no nervousness setting in.
He said: “Not nervous at all, we’re always playing to win.
“We knew in a long season there would be a run where it’s difficult to translate good performances into wins. It’s clear that our goal is to win 40 points as quickly as possible. We know where we are and what we have to do. We’re all quite calm and confident.”
Leeds are still unbeaten at home in the league this season, winning one and drawing three.
Premier League Table
- Position 1, 2, 3, 4 : Promotion – Champions League (League phase)
- Position 5 : Promotion – Europa League (League phase)
- Position 18, 19, 20 : Relegation – Championship
Team News for Leeds v Tottenham
Farke delivered a mixed update at his press conference on Thursday. “Good news with Joe Rodon. He’s back in full team training this week,” he said. “With Anton [Stach] and Noah [Okafor] we have to see, so I would say some mixed news.”
Rodon is unlikely to start despite returning to training, and Mateo Joseph remains out with a cruciate ligament injury.
Striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been struggling with a foot problem with Farke adding: “Dominic had a little setback with his foot. He was not able to train today, but we’re carefully optimistic he’ll be back tomorrow.”
For Tottenham, Rodrigo Bentancur is available again after serving his three-match suspension. Pedro Porro could return to the starting line-up for the first time in six weeks, after impressing off the bench against Palace. Destiny Udogie is back in contention, and De Zerbi will hope Lucas Bergvall and Tosin Adarabioyo are fit. Savio could also be involved after a muscle injury.
Mykhaylo Mudryk is still out, and Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert remain long-term absentees.
