A legend of Australian rock, Gary ‘Angry’ Anderson, has died aged 79 following a brief health battle, with his death coming just under a decade after the tragic loss of his son
Australian rock legend Angry Anderson has died aged 79. The Rose Tattoo frontman had been dealing with a brief health battle, and his death was announced by his family and bandmates on social media.
They said: “It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gary “Angry” Anderson on the eve of Monday, 21 September 2026 surrounded by his loved ones here in Australia. Angry was a devoted father, and much-loved member of his friends, bandmates and the wider music and entertainment community.
“His loss will be deeply felt by all those who knew and loved him both here in Australia and overseas. The family and band members are asking for privacy at this difficult time and will not be giving interviews. We kindly ask that their wishes are respected as they come to terms with this devastating loss and take the time they need to grieve. We thank everyone for their prayers and messages of love and continued support. With love, The Anderson family and Rose Tattoo Band. Stay young, grow strong.”
Anderson’s death comes just eight years after the death of his son Liam, who was 26 when he died. Liam Anderson was killed by Mathew Flame, a young man suffering from an acute drug-induced psychotic episode when he beat his friend Liam to death in a Sydney park.
Flame, who had taken ten MDMA pills throughout the night, was convicted of manslaughter and later diagnosed with schizophrenia. Two years after his son’s death Anderson said: “When he died part of me died with him.”
Following his death, Anderson leaves behind his remaining children, Roxanne, Galen and Blaine, whom he shared with ex-wife Lindy Michael. The rocker, whose full name was Gary Stephen Anderson, had been dealing with a series of health issues shortly before he died. He had been hospitalised following a cardiac arrest in August.
During his illness, Anderson’s representatives told fans: “We would like to sincerely thank everyone for the overwhelming messages of support, love, and kind words. Your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes mean more to Angry and his family than we can express.”
Due to Anderson’s heart attack, Rose Tattoo had to cancel multiple European dates of their One Last Ride tour. They had nine shows left to play.
Anderson was one of Australia’s most celebrated musicians. His band, which rose up to prominence from the pub-rock scene, released their first album in 1978 and continued to make music until 1987.
But, Anderson was perhaps best known for his connection to two other Australian legends. His song Suddenly was played on Neighbours during the 1985 wedding of Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan’s characters.
