In his memoir, the rapper revealed a shocking detail that he learned recently. The information has left Lil questioning his origins. He was raised by his mom, Carrie, and his dad, Willie. He admitted that it was hard to process the information about his lineage.
Lil Jon admits that it was hard to process that the man who raised him was not his biological father
In his memoir, I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me, Lil Jon revealed that he recently learned that the man, Willie, who raised him was not his biological father. He was raised alongside two biological brothers, Willie Junior and Chris, plus adopted siblings, Mario and Sheena. For the uninitiated, Jon lost his father, Willie, in the early 2000s. He died of bone marrow cancer. Later, in 2013, the rapper lost his mother, Carrie. She died after having a stroke as a result of complications from diabetes.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Lil recalled that his parents did not really understand his interest in music at first. For those unaware, the rapper became interested in music during his childhood and learned to play the drums by age 6. He expressed his grief as his father, Willie, didn’t see him become a star. Sharing his mom’s reaction after his successful career, Lil said:
“He didn’t really see me become a star. He would’ve just been so proud of me. Mom was just so happy because I was the firstborn, so I was the baby.”
Lil revealed that he recently learned that Willie was not his biological father. He discovered this after one of his cousins took a DNA test to learn more about their family history. When the cousin shared the DNA results with Jon, they discovered that their DNA did not match as expected. However, the cousin reassured the rapper and producer that he would still consider him family despite what they had learned.
The discovery led Jon to question more about his biological family. He mentioned that unfortunately both the man he grew up calling his father and his biological father, as well as his mother, have passed away. He admitted that he felt frustrated as there is no one to answer his questions. He said:
“Neither one of my fathers is here anymore, nor my mother, so I can’t get answers. And that drives you crazy as well, until you get to the point where you have to accept that you will never get answers.”
Further, in the interview, Jon shared that lately he did receive an opportunity to learn more information about his family. The rapper mentioned that he had his brother and sister to reach out to on his biological dad’s side. But he was not ready to process that and have a conversation with them. He added that it was hard to process and required time. He said:
“It’s just hard to process. It takes time.”

Besides being a famous rapper, Lil Jon is a father of a son named Nathan. For the unversed, Lil and his ex-wife, Nicole Smith, welcomed their son, Nathan, in 1998. He followed his dad’s footsteps and pursued music as DJ Young Slade. Earlier, in February 2026, Nathan died unexpectedly at the age of 27. He went missing in early February 2026 and later was found dead. His cause of death was ruled accidental drowning in the ‘setting of psilocybin use.’
In his memoir, Jon mentioned that his son, Nathan, was dealing with some emotional difficulties and had been struggling with intense physical pain for three or four years. He dedicated the memoir to him. He revealed that when he was in the midst of preparing for the book’s release, he received a devastating call that informed him his son, Nathan, was missing before his eventual death.
