The $40 million LIV Golf Team Championship event for late August will be cancelled with an official announcement scheduled for Wednesday, according to X account @flushingitgolf.
The tourney, scheduled for Aug 27-30 at The Cardinal at Saint John’s in Michigan, will be the second LIV Golf event canceled this year, joining a June event in New Orleans.
The wheels had been in motion for this event to be canceled, with Cleeks Golf Club captain Martin Kaymer telling Today’s Golfer last week that it was “highly unlikely” the event would be held.
He estimated a “five percent” chance it would actually happen amid the league’s financial struggles.
The @flushingitgolf account reported that multiple contractors said their travels and accommodations had been canceled with money being “owed.”
“I heard yesterday, actually, on the Golf Channel that there were talks that Indianapolis could become a team event instead of Michigan. That we don’t know. I think that would be a shame that we get reduced even more individual tournaments,” Kaymer told the outlet last week.
“On the other hand, how do you want to have a team winning the whole season if you don’t have a team event? We need to be honest. The whole season was a bit of a … there was so much happening. Yeah. Cancelled New Orleans. Cancelled most likely the last event. So I think it’s important to just finish the season and hopefully we’ll have a plan for 2027.”
The Team Championship event is one of LIV’s biggest since it ends the season and comes with a lucrative cash prize, although it has diminished from 2025.
The tourney featured a $50 million prize last year, but that is down to $40 million, according to Front Office Sports, with the winners’ cut dipping from $14 million to $11.2 million.
Money problems continue to plague LIV Golf after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced in April it would be pulling its funding at the end of the season.
LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil could not guarantee in June that the rebel league would host its final four season events, and plenty speculated at the time that this event would be axed.
He has been seeking roughly $350 million to keep the tour alive.
The only remaining event on LIV Golf’s schedule is the New York tourney at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster from Aug. 6-9.
