Victor Munoz impressed and Alexis Mac Allister got his first minutes of pre-season as Liverpool played out a goalless draw with Como in the first of two pre-season friendlies between the clubs today.
Munoz played for 46 minutes of a game that was played over two halves of 35 minutes each, and looked lively down Liverpool’s left-hand side.
And Mac Allister lasted almost an hour after a delayed start to his pre-season campaign following Argentina’s run to the World Cup final.
It was very much a second-string XI selected by Andoni Iraola for this behind-closed-doors game at the AXA Training Centre with Liverpool’s big guns expected to play in the 6pm kick-off in front of fans at Anfield.
Wataru Endo and Luke Chambers both played out of position at centre-half and came up against the vastly experienced former Spain striker Alvaro Morata while Harvey Elliott played in an unfamiliar right-wing role.
Munoz impresses down the Liverpool left
Munoz caught the eye early on with a twisting run and cross that was headed wide by midfielder Trey Nyoni.
Como’s Senegal international winger Assane Diao was also lively on the opposite flank and he was involved in an intriguing battle with Liverpool full-back Calvin Ramsay who more than held his own.
Mac Allister fired a free-kick into the wall approaching the half-hour mark before Diao wasted a superb chance for Como, air-kicking from close range with the goal gaping.
Federico Chiesa saw a header from a Munoz cross well saved before the Spain international went himself, running half the length of the pitch only to hammer a cross-shot into the side-netting.
Liverpool came close again when substitute Will Wright went round Como goalkeeper Noel Tornqvist and picked out Nyoni but he shot wide.
Striker Lewis Koumas then curled wide after Liverpool stole possession high up the field.
Wright came close again before the end as Como preserved their clean sheet.
