Preview for Liverpool v Manchester City
Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon with the Premier League’s only perfect record on the line, and with the noise around City louder than it has ever been.
Enzo Maresca’s side return from the international break as the only team in the division with five wins from five. They have scored 13 and conceded five, and they went into the break in style, beating Sunderland 5-3 at the Etihad after a 5-0 Carabao Cup win over Norwich. Erling Haaland already has five league goals.
Off the pitch, though, it has been the most turbulent few weeks in the club’s modern history. An independent commission found City guilty of 114 of the 115 charges relating to breaches of financial regulations, and while the club is appealing, the cloud over the Etihad is not going anywhere. Anfield is expected to make its feelings known on Sunday.
Liverpool are still unbeaten under Andoni Iraola, but their start has been more steady than spectacular. Two wins and three draws have them sixth on nine points, six behind City, and a win here would take them into the top four. They have won four of their last five in all competitions, including a 3-1 EFL Cup win over Tottenham and a 1-0 victory at Bournemouth before the break.
In his first season at Anfield, Iraola has had to cope with a brutal international break. Two of his most important attackers are out, and he will need his other big-money signings to step up in the biggest game of his Liverpool career so far.
“It’s an exciting game, at home at Anfield against the league leaders, who have won all their games,” Iraola said. “They will go for it, so will we. We have to be ready and help our supporters.”
The Premier League Table
- Position 1, 2, 3, 4 : Promotion – Champions League (League phase)
- Position 5 : Promotion – Europa League (League phase)
- Position 18, 19, 20 : Relegation – Championship
Team News for Liverpool v Manchester City
Liverpool will be without Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, both of whom were injured on international duty. Isak, who has four league goals this season, has a thigh problem, while Gakpo is dealing with an ankle injury. Neither is expected to be out long term.
Hugo Ekitike is also still unavailable, which leaves Liverpool short up front. Iraola will either select youngster Lewis Koumas or move winger Bradley Barcola into a more central role.
There is better news at the back. Jeremy Jacquet, who made his France debut during the break, is good to go.
For City, Phil Foden serves the last game of his three-match suspension after his red card in the Manchester derby. Erling Haaland is fit, as is Antoine Semenyo. Nico O’Reilly is a doubt after pulling out of the England squad.
