ITV presenter Lorraine Kelly reflected on a difficult period in her personal life and how a particular song helped her during her recovery

Lorraine Kelly has opened up about a heartwarming act of kindness from one of her favourite musicians after she suffered a terrifying accident. The TV host was reminiscing about the music that has shaped her life on BBC Radio 2’s Tracks of My Years when she disclosed the profound significance behind one particular track.

Chatting with Vernon Kay, the 66-year-old revealed that her “favourite song of all time” is Careful by Horse McDonald. Elaborating on her selection, Lorraine explained how the singer, a dear friend, provided much-needed comfort during an especially challenging time.

“Horse is the most extraordinary woman, she’s got a voice,” she told the presenter. “Anytime I’ve seen her live, it just goes right into your soul.

“When I wasn’t well, she came round. I’d had a terrible accident and she came round and she sang that song for me. I could hear her voice, I could hear her singing in the garden, so I thought Steve [her husband] must be playing a song in the garden, and she was there singing to me,” the Glasgow-born broadcaster continued.

“It was… honestly, I was balling my eyes out, it was amazing,” she recalled. “My husband had organised for her to come. She’s a friend, but for her to come and sing to me, because I was not in a good place, it was amazing. She’s someone that I would turn to a lot.”

Lorraine refrained from detailing which specific accident she was discussing. Nevertheless, back in 2012, she disclosed that she came “close to death” following a horse-riding mishap.

To commemorate the NHS’s 70th birthday, the ITV presenter praised the “amazing” team at St George’s Hospital in south London who treated her following the accident.

During her return visit, she was reunited with consultant Sarah Krishnanandan, who formed part of the medical staff that looked after her when she was rushed to hospital.

Ms Krishnanandan explained the TV star arrived with “a deep wound” to her thigh and had “probably lost quite a bit of blood” after being trampled by her horse.

“I’m just one of many that are helped by this incredible service on a daily basis,” Lorraine shared.

The broadcaster’s daughter Rosie Smith, who was at her mother’s bedside during her hospital stay, also expressed her gratitude to the medical staff.

“I first realised how serious it was when I saw her for the first time,” Rosie shared. “She was really pale. The staff were amazing and the nurses were great. Martin put my mum at ease, and they made me and my dad feel really comfortable.”

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9.30am on ITV and ITVX
