Karwar: Haliyal police have arrested a lorry theft accused who had been absconding since 2014 after tracing him to a village in Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district.

The accused, identified as Madhu Yuvaraj Aihole of Kudachi in Belagavi district, was wanted in connection with two lorry theft cases registered at Haliyal police station in 2014. Police had arrested six accused persons in connection with the case, and also recovered the stolen property and filed charge sheets before the court.

According to police, Aihole, listed as the fifth accused in the cases, had obtained bail in 2014. As he failed to appear before the court thereafter, a warrant was issued against him, and he remained untraceable for years.

Acting on specific information and technical inputs, a special team constituted in Haliyal police station found him in Band Mailaram village of Ranga Reddy district in Telangana.

He was arrested on June 13 and produced before the court, which remanded him to judicial custody.

Police said Aihole is also involved in several other criminal cases, including cases registered at Nandgad and Malmaruti police stations in Belagavi district, Kasabapete police station in Hubballi, and two cases in Haliyal.

The arrest was made by a team led by Haliyal Circle Police Inspector Jayapal Patil under the guidance of Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police Deepan MN, Additional Superintendent of Police Krishnamurthy G, and Dandeli DSP Shivanand Madarakandi.
