The founding vocalist of the band Sick of It All and one of the well-known voices of New York Hardcore, Lou Koller, passed away at the age of 59. The singer’s death was confirmed by his bandmates. This year, Sick of It All would complete 40th years, having been founded by Lou and his brother, Pete Koller, in 1986.
Lou was born in Queens. The band Sick of It All initially released a 7-inch via Revelation Records in 1987, and later a full-length re-recorded version was again dropped for the band’s 1989 full-length debut, Blood, Sweat and No Tears. Lou Koller’s bandmates recently expressed their grief over the passing of the vocalist, and amid this, let’s have a look at his health issues and personal life.
Lou Koller passed away at 59: The cause of his death and health issues
Lou Koller’s cause of death has not been officially revealed. However, he had a long battle with Adenocarcinoma cancer. It was in 2024 when Lou Koller had to pause his touring in the middle, and during this time, he revealed to his fans and followers that doctors had found a tumour in his oesophagus (the tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach).
Lou Koller back then shared that the tumour had spread to his stomach, which required him to undergo treatment. He was later diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma cancer. According to the data in the public domain, Adenocarcinoma cancer generally forms in glandular epithelial cells, and the tissue can develop in the lungs, colon, rectum, prostate, breast, pancreas, oesophagus, and stomach.

By May 2025, Lou Koller revealed that he had undergone the final stage of chemotherapy and revealed that he was cancer-free. However, a few months later, his cancer had relapsed. The vocalist’s fans and his community helped him throughout his cancer treatment journey.
In the statement from the band that confirmed his passing, his mates thanked those who supported Lou. According to the statement, Lou fought a strong battle with cancer for two years. An excerpt from the statement could be read as:
“At this time of intense grief, we must again acknowledge the great help and support offered by everyone who donated to Lou’s medical fund. You all helped Lou feel very special and very loved as he battled away these last two years. His battle is over now and he can finally rest. Hopefully he can somehow still see and feel the beautiful, positive mark he left on the world.”
Was Lou Koller married?
There’s no authentic information about Lou Koller’s marital life, as of now. However, some reports claimed that the vocalist was married to someone named Mellisa and they have a child named Aurelia. In many of her IG posts, Melissa showered her daughter with love, stating, ‘thank you for choosing me as your mom’. It was in 2024 that Lou Koller was linked to someone named Carrie Cannon.

Carrie Cannon received love from Lou’s fans for taking care of the vocalist when he was dealing with health issues. Lou kept his personal life hush-hush, and thus, nothing much could be known about it. After his passing, Lou’s daughter, Aurelia shared a clip on her IG from her childhood, where she was seen practising songs with her dad. Mellisa recently re-shared the post as well. The vocalist’s family has yet to release any statement about Lou’s passing.
