Celebrity Traitors star Lucy Beaumont has called out make predators in comedy, insisting people didn’t believe her and other women who were speaking up at the time
Lucy Beaumont has called out make predators in comedy, insisting people didn’t believe her and other women who were speaking up.
The Celebrity Traitors star has been on the comedy scene since 2009 and has been open about the earlier days on the comedy circuit. In a new interview, she explains how men were “embarrassed” by the idea of women telling a joke.
Speaking to Good Housekeeping about her experiences, she explained: “When I was in my late 20s, the comedy circuit was open to abuse. Men were embarrassed at the idea that you were going to tell a joke.
“When I was in my 30s and I tried to speak up about predators in comedy, everyone assumed I was referring to Russell Brand. I was in the papers more than he was… But people didn’t believe the women who were speaking up. They thought we might not be telling the truth. I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t be trusted when I was doing really well and didn’t need the bloody attention.”
During the lengthy interview, Lucy – who was married to fellow comedian Jon Richardson for nine years before they divorced ij April 2024 – also quipped that even her therapist finds her “weird”.
“Chaos just seems to find me. Even my therapist, who has been doing her job for 30 years, finds me weird. She wanted to know about where I felt safe and I told her about a primary-school dinner lady with a big chest who used to let me nestle under her breast… She suggested I come back for more sessions!” she said.
Lucy opened up about her ADHD diagnosis in 2023, but she recalled how she was “sceptical” about her own diagnosis until they revealed one specific symptom which she remembered vividly from her own childhood.
“The more I focus on the [label of] ADHD, the worse it gets. What I need is ways of coping when I’m busy. I’m hellbent on not taking medication. I know the things that help: I feel relaxed when I’m gardening or spending time with my 90-year-old grandad,” she said.
“The truth is I was sceptical about the diagnosis until I was asked if I’d developed tics [repetitive, involuntary muscle movements] between the age of seven and 11, which is often specific to ADHD. I couldn’t believe it! I got shivers down my spine.”
Lucy became a household name when she took part in the 2009 competition So You Think You’re Funny, where she was named a finalist. From there, she co-wrote and starred in radio sitcom To Hull and Back with Maureen Lipman and later led comedy series Meet the Richardsons with her then husband Jon Richardson.
From there, she had various stints and appearances on The Weakest Link, Taskmaster and Would I Lie To You? before she signed up fir the first series of the Celebrity Traitors, where she exited after being ‘murdered’.
