Netflix’s recently released documentary, The Crash, reignited people’s interest in the infamous 2022 case of Mackenzie Shirilla. The documentary follows the high-profile Ohio criminal case of Mackenzie Shirilla, a 17-year-old (now 21) who was convicted of dual murder. She crashed her car into a wall at 100mph and killed two passengers. One of them was her 20-year-old boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and the other was their friend, 19-year-old Davion Flanagan.

After crashing her Toyota Camry into a brick wall in Strongsville, Ohio, on July 31, 2022, Mackenzie Shirilla texted her boyfriend, Dominic Russo’s mom. According to a 2024 Ohio Court of Appeals opinion upholding Shirilla’s conviction obtained by PEOPLE, Shirilla told Russo’s mom, Christine Russo, that she had no memory of the crash.

In her text, Shirilla recalled having a vague memory of turning onto the street and then blacking out. Shirilla even texted Russo’s mother, stating that she would try to get hypnotised to recall what happened during the crash. As per the opinion, Shirilla wrote:
“I remember turning onto the street, and then my vision fades to black. It really kills me not to be able to remember anything. I promise you I would tell you. I’ve been asking my therapist why I don’t remember, and she said it’s because of trauma. I’m gonna try to get myself hypnotized and make myself remember.”

The opinion also revealed Christine’s version of Mackenzie and Dominic’s relationship. Christine told investigators that Mackenzie and Dominic’s relationship was strained and the duo was indulging in constant fights and arguments. Christine also revealed that Shirilla was obsessed with Dominic and was not ready to leave him.

And Dominic’s mom even claimed in court that Mackenzie often threatened Dominic during their verbal fights. And now, TMZ obtained a few disturbing texts between Mackenzie and Dominic.

The texts were a part of the police investigation into Mackenzie’s fatal car crash that killed Dominic and their friend, Davion Flanagan. The texts looked disturbing as Mackenzie appeared upset as she texted Dominic, “I’m gonna kill someone, I just want to bang my head on the wall till I’m dead”. In the texts, Mackenzie also complained about the way Dominic treated her.

Dominic’s mother’s lawyer claimed Mackenzie intentionally crashed the car
During the trial, Mackenzie and her parents kept affirming that she passed out due to a medical emergency and didn’t remember anything about the accident. On the other hand, the prosecuting lawyers argued that she intentionally crashed the car to end her relationship with Dominic. During the trial, several ugly fights were revealed which happened between the couple.
As per the reports, Dominic wanted to end their relationship in June 2022. Lawyers highlighted that the couple’s past fight and Mackenzie’s threatening and trying to break into Dominic’s house is a motive that points to her intent to kill him.
