Mackenzie Shirilla has gained thousands of followers since her story landed on Netflix
Mackenzie Shirilla has gained tens of thousands of followers since her chilling case landed on Netflix.
She is at the centre of The Crash, a new documentary that unravels the tragedy that landed her behind bars. In July 2022, the teenager slammed her car into a brick wall at 100mph.
Passengers Dominic Russo, 20, and Davion Flanagan, 19, were sadly declared dead at the scene. While Mackenzie, who was 17 at the time, was left seriously injured.
What initially seemed like a devastating accident soon turned into a murder investigation. During a 2023 bench trial, prosecutors argued that Mackenzie had intentionally crashed the vehicle.
The judge agreed and found her guilty on all charges, sentencing her to two 15-to-life sentences with the possibility of parole.
It seems the documentary has gained Mackenzie some notoriety as her Instagram following is growing larger by the day.
A page that appears to belong to Mackenzie set up in 2013 currently sits at 45,000 followers. In The Crash, which dropped on May 15, her friend Rosie Graham claimed Mackenzie had just “a few thousand” followers across various platforms when they met. Meanwhile it has been reported the Instagram account thought to be Mackenzie’s had just 2,000 followers before the documentary landed.
The prisoner has also kept her supporters updated with fresh selfies seemingly taken in prison. In her most recent post, Mackenzie thanked fans for “seeing through the lies,” maintaining that she did not murder her then-boyfriend Dominic and their friend Davion.
She wrote: “Thank you to those who see through the lies, and to those who take time out of their day to form their own opinion as to the truth of what actually happened. I’m not perfect…I never will be. But I am NOT guilty of murdr.”

Mackenzie added: “Like any young couple, Dom and I had our disagreements and arguments. However, I always loved Dom and would never do anything to hurt him, Davion, or anyone else I care about.
“I will respectfully and peacefully continue to fight for my innocence through the proper legal channels.” She went on to thank those who have continued to rally behind her.
