Mackenzie Shirilla has constantly been in the spotlight for the past few days, all thanks to Netflix’s latest true-crime documentary, The Crash. It tells the story of a then-17-year-old Mackenzie (now 21) who has been found guilty of dual murder. The victims of the murder were her 20-year-old boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and their mutual friend, 19-year-old Davion Flanagan. As the documentary has been generating significant buzz and bringing renewed spotlight to the case, Dominic’s older sister has been criticising Mackenzie’s parents for creating “a monster.”
Dominic Russo’s older sister calls out Mackenzie Shirilla’s parents for creating “a monster”
Netflix’s The Crash was released on May 15, 2026. In the documentary, the makers have included several interviews with Mackenzie Shirilla’s victims’ loved ones, her parents, and herself from prison. Amid this, Dominic Russo’s older sister, Christine Russo, said recently that Mackenzie’s parents have not shown enough remorse, especially with the way that they have continued to defend their daughter in the documentary. The 37-year-old told People, “It’s all for show.”

For those unaware, Mackenzie’s parents have faced criticism after the release of The Crash, over the remarks that they made defending their daughter’s marijuana use and dismissing serious allegations like those that claimed Mackenzie used to bully other students in school. In fact, her parents also suggested that Mackenzie had suffered a medical emergency, leading her to lose consciousness at the time of the crash, which claimed the lives of her boyfriend and friend, leaving her with no memory of the incident. Taking note of the parents’ behaviour, Christine stated:
“There is a fine line between defending your kids. And they created a monster — they’re monsters themselves.”

In The Crash, Mackenzie’s parents, Steve and Natalie, alleged that they had collected evidence which would help their daughter’s case, but was not presented in court. They also went on to dispute the claims that Mackenzie had threatened to crash her car with her boyfriend inside it ahead of the deadly incident. Steve and Natalie even mentioned the text messages where Mackenzie seemingly sent messages to Dominic’s mom telling her that he was “trying to end my life.”

If reports are believed to be true, at present, Mackenzie’s attorneys are asking the Ohio Supreme Court to review her case. According to court records obtained by Cleveland 19 and reviewed by People, her attorneys argue that Mackenzie would have been acquitted had the paperwork been filed on time. It is worth noting that her previous appeals had been denied. This constant applying for appeals is seen by Christine Russo as Mackenzie being unable to take accountability for murdering her brother and their friend. She said:

Christine Russo wants Ohio lawmakers to see how Mackenzie Shirilla has been potentially profiting from social media
Reportedly, Christine Russo has since launched a petition for “Dom and Davion’s Law.” In the petition, she urged Ohio lawmakers to update the state’s Son of Sam’s law, bearing in mind the digital age, especially with the way Mackenzie Shirilla has allegedly been profiting from social media. The petition reads:
“Since the documentary aired, our family has had to relive this tragedy publicly over and over again. What hurts even more is seeing how modern social media culture allows violent offenders to gain attention, followers, donations, publicity, and influence from the crimes that destroyed families like mine.”

Alongside the petition, Christine Russo has also launched a GoFundMe for the Change the Game for Dom Foundation. With the funds, she aims to help underprivileged children access opportunities to play basketball. It is worth mentioning that Davion Flanagan’s family has also been doing their part in honouring his legacy. They reportedly established a barber scholarship fund in his name. Since 2023, it has raised a whopping USD 135,000 through GoFundMe.
