BHOPAL: A political row has erupted after detention and subsequent release of Madhya Pradesh unit Congress chief Jitu Patwari’s brother Kulbhusan alias Nana by the police in Indore for his suspected links to two alleged drug paddlers with the party calling it ‘political vendetta’.

Indore police picked up two persons, Kulbhusan Patwari and Manav Gangwani, on Thursday for questioning following seizure of brown sugar from alleged drug paddlers, Irfan Khan and Sanjay Kaushal.

Kulbhusan and Manav were however released late on Thursday night after questioning.

“The Rajendra Nagar police arrested Irfan Khan alias Golu Chanderi and Sanjay Kaushal alias Ronnie Bhai following seizure of 10.8 grams of brown sugar from them”, Indore Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Narendra Rawat said on Friday.

An FIR was registered under Narcotic Drugs and psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in connection with the seizure of the drug, he said.

Interrogation of the two arrested accused has revealed that they were going to deliver the consignment to Kulbhusan and Manav, he said.

Following this, Kulbhusan and Manav were detained and interrogated and after gathering evidence regarding their links with the arrested accused, and other leads, they were released and handed over to their lawyer, the police officer said.

He said that Kulbhusan and Manav will be called for questioning again, if necessary.

He said that a police probe into the case is underway.

The police officer said that an old case under NDPS Act was earlier registered against Kulbhusan in Vijay Nagar police station in Indore, and his communication with the main accused, Irfan Khan, has been established.

Nine criminal cases were pending against Kulbhusan, he said.

The state Congress president Patwari however called it ‘revenge politics’ and alleged that the action by the Indore police sent a message that anyone who raises voice against the state government or chief minister Mohan Yadav will be suppressed and their family members will be victimized.

He however said that he will not be intimidated by such actions by police and continue to fight against the corruptions and misdeeds of the state government.

State BJP president Hemant Khandelwal on Friday dismissed the charges, saying that the Congress leader’s statement is devoid of facts, misleading and a failed attempt to generate sympathy for political gains.

“The person who is supported by the Congress already has several criminal cases registered against him. No one is above law”, he said and added that manufacturing a false narrative of political vendetta to avoid criminal investigations has been a long-standing practice of the Congress party, he said.
