Hyderabad: A major drinking water pipeline leak was detected beneath a railway track in Dayanand Nagar under the Malkajgiri circle, prompting swift action by the Water Board. Railway officials had reported the matter of water gushing up from beneath the tracks to the board.

A joint inspection by railway and HMWS&SB teams confirmed that there were no railway water pipelines at the site, and the leakage was traced to a main pipeline belonging to the water board.

Officials warned that continued leakage beneath the railway track could weaken the structure and pose a serious risk to train operations. As a precautionary measure, water supply was suspended until repair works are completed. The disruption has affected water supply in Vani Nagar and Bhavani Nagar areas.

Acting on the directions of HMWS&SB managing director Ashok Reddy, emergency repair works were launched. Excavation at a reception pit outside the railway limits revealed a 300 mm MS carrier pipeline laid within an 800 mm casing pipe at a depth of around 20 feet. The presence of a heavy thrust block has made the repair process technically challenging.

Officials are deploying heavy machinery, including excavators, air compressors, and dewatering pumps, to carry out the works. Authorities have decided that replacing the existing 300 mm pipeline entirely with a new one is the only permanent solution. The repair work is estimated to cost around ₹48 lakh.
