VIJAYAWADA: APGENCO managing director and Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM) CEO S. Nagalakshmi has called upon people to make eco-friendly practices an integral part of their daily lives, stressing the need to conserve electricity and water, reduce plastic consumption and manage waste responsibly.
Speaking on the occasion of the BRICS Sustainable Lifestyle Week (BSLW), being observed from November 1 to 7 as part of India’s BRICS presidency in 2026, she said environmental protection could not be left to governments alone and required active participation from every individual.
The week-long initiative, aligned with the Centre’s ‘Mission LiFE – Lifestyle for Environment’, aims to promote sustainable living through simple and practical measures. Nagalakshmi said sustainability should go beyond slogans and awareness campaigns and translate into everyday actions such as switching off electrical appliances when not in use, avoiding water wastage, shunning single-use plastics and preferring reusable products.
The seven-day campaign will focus on seven themes: healthy lifestyles on the first day, energy conservation on the second, water conservation on the third, sustainable food practices on the fourth, reduction of single-use plastic on the fifth, minimising electronic waste on the sixth and reducing general waste on the seventh. She said an action plan had been circulated to officials of APGENCO, APTRANSCO, APCPDCL, APEPDCL, APSPDCL and APSECM, directing them to conduct awareness programmes at the field level with the participation of employees, local communities and students.
APSECM will collect details and photographs of the activities conducted each day and upload them to the national Mission LiFE portal to document implementation and encourage wider public participation.
Nagalakshmi urged power sector officials and employees to lead by example by reducing electricity consumption in offices, preventing water wastage, segregating waste and promoting reusable materials. She said the observance should not remain a one-time exercise but should inspire people to sustain environment-friendly practices throughout the year for the benefit of future generations.
