Making sense out of Notre Dame’s No. 11 ranking by the CFP committee

On Tuesday night, the College Football Playoff Committee put out its first set of rankings and Notre Dame, the No. 4 team in the country, is suddenly the No. 11 team in the country. While this was a massive surprise for a lot of fans out there, I was not all that surprised — but still a little shocked.

For the past two weeks I have been saying that the committee will likely ranked the Irish somewhere between 8-10, so in a lot of ways, I was right — but not quite. The committee still managed to make this entire thing worse than we could have imagined with its over-the-top SEC lovefest — especially with teams like Alabama and Texas.

It’s a con job, and one that ESPN’s David Hale pointed out as something that’s straight out of a horror movie.

For the stoic chosen ones out there, we get it — they’re just going to have to beat Miami. No one is disagreeing with that sentiment, but you can’t sit there and NOT say that the committee is hell bent on holding Notre Dame to a different standard. Per usual, the reasoning is fluid because there is no standard AT ALL. This isn’t just about Notre Dame, but the Irish and their No. 11 ranking highlight all that wrong with this process.

I love polls — absolutely love polls and rankings. I am NOT one of those people that want there to be no preseason rankings. It’s too much fun and for better or for worse — it sets the stage for the CFB season. These playoff rankings, however… do we really need them right now? Clearly it was a farce last season, and clearly we have already entered that arena this season.

One thing is for certain… the committee is doing a fine job of selling the 24 team playoff to the American people, because they’re telling you that they have no idea what they’re doing or how to explain it either.
