Malayalam cinema veteran Mammootty has been conferred an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) by Mahatma Gandhi University, recognising his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema over a career that has spanned more than five decades.

A landmark honour for Mammootty

The honour was presented during the university’s convocation ceremony held in Kottayam on Sunday. Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar handed over the honorary doctorate in the presence of senior university officials, members of the academic council and Higher Education Minister Roji M. John.

Soon after receiving the recognition, Mammootty shared a heartfelt note on social media thanking those who supported him throughout his journey. “Humbled to have received the Honorary D.Litt. from Mahatma Gandhi University today, presented by the Honourable Governor of Kerala. My gratitude to each and every one of you who stood by my side throughout this memorable journey,” the actor wrote.

The university acknowledged Mammootty’s enduring impact on Indian cinema and highlighted his contribution across multiple languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. Over the years, the actor has earned widespread acclaim for portraying a remarkable variety of characters, ranging from intense dramatic roles to mainstream commercial leads.

This marks the third honorary doctorate in Mammootty’s career. He was previously conferred with honorary doctorates by the University of Calicut and the University of Kerala in 2010.

A career that continues to evolve

Widely regarded as one of the finest actors Indian cinema has produced, Mammootty has appeared in more than 400 films across languages. Over the decades, he has consistently reinvented himself through a mix of auteur-driven cinema and mainstream entertainers, building a legacy that has remained relevant across generations.

The actor has won several major honours over the years, including multiple National Film Awards and Kerala State Film Awards. He is also a recipient of the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan, two of India’s highest civilian honours.

Alongside Mammootty, noted nadaswaram artiste Thiruvizha Jayashankar also received an honorary D.Litt. during the ceremony, while vascular surgeon N Radhakrishnan was awarded the Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree.

On the work front, Mammootty was last seen in Mahesh Narayanan’s spy thriller Patriot alongside Mohanlal, Fahadh Faasil, Kunchacko Boban and Nayanthara.

The actor also has a packed slate ahead. His upcoming projects include Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Padayaatra, Nithish Sahadev’s next film after Falimy, and Khalid Rahman’s Mattancherry Mafia, which co-stars Naslen and Asif Ali. He is also set to return to Tamil cinema with Rajkumar Periasamy’s upcoming film starring Dhanush.
