A man has been charged with faking injury and submitting a fraudulent compensation claim after the Bondi Beach massacre, while publishing misleading material supporting his claims of injury.
The 46-year-old was arrested at Parramatta police station on Tuesday morning, more than 10 months after father-and-son Sajid and Naveed Akram opened fire on a group of Jewish Australians celebrating Hanukkah at Bondi Beach, killing 15 and injuring dozens more.
Sajid, 50, was killed in an ensuing shootout with police, while Naveed, 24, survived the attack and has been charged with terror offences. It was the worst terror attack in Australian history.
Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad homed in on the 46-year-old after he allegedly gave a false statement suggesting he was injured in the shooting, then subsequently submitted a fraudulent compensation claim in the aftermath.
He was charged with publishing false and misleading material to obtain advantage and making a false representation resulting in police investigation.
The man was granted conditional bail on Tuesday, ahead of his appearance at Parramatta Local Court on November 18.
